Your responsibilities includeYour responsibilities include

  • Personnel and technical leadership of an interdisciplinary team of approximately 30 qualified employees, as well as the strategic development of Division 8.5 “X-ray Imaging” within Department 8 “Non-Destructive Testing (NDT)”
  • Guidance and organization of applied and basic research on NDT methods, as well as the (further) development of applications for material characterization in the fields of computed tomography, X-ray refraction, residual stress analysis (diffraction), and synchrotron X-ray imaging
  • Active participation in the team of division heads within department 8 “Non-Destructive Testing”
  • Active shaping of change processes within the division and at BAM
  • Ensuring equitable personnel development and implementing BAM’s equality goals while taking diversity and anti-discrimination into account within the area of responsibility 
  • Providing impetus and independently securing third-party funded research projects
  • Developing research topics for early-career researchers and supervising them in their research activities
  • Contributing to the further development of BAM’s focus areas and actively supporting interdisciplinary collaboration within BAM
  • Positioning BAM as a federal research institution  through participation in national and international scientific networks, advisory boards, and standards committees, as well as providing policy advice where appropriate
  • Expanding existing and initiating new collaborations with national and international partner institutions 

Your qualificationsYour qualifications

  • A university degree with above-average grades in a relevant engineering discipline, physics, or a comparable field
  • A doctoral degree earned with excellent grades
  • Several years of independent research and scientific achievements in at least one of the following areas: computed tomography, X-ray refraction, residual stress analysis (diffraction), synchrotron X-ray imaging—or in a related field
  • A leader with several years of experience in the personnel and technical management of scientific and technical work areas and interdisciplinary teams
  • Extensive experience in independently addressing scientific questions, successfully securing third-party funding, publishing and presenting scientific results, as well as mentoring early-career researchers
  • Experience in research management, as well as a basic knowledge and understanding of leadership dynamics within larger groups (technical and disciplinary leadership)
  • Strong expertise in equality, diversity, and anti-discrimination, as well as experience in applying the relevant legal frameworks 
  • Fluency in German and English (C-level proficiency in English is desirable)
  • Experience in committee work, policy-making, and policy advising is an advantage, as is involvement in scientific networks
  • A team-oriented work style with excellent communication skills and a high degree of self-reflection
  • Strong conceptual, strategic, and innovative thinking skills, assertiveness, and a high degree of decision-making ability

Applicants who meet the prerequisites will generally receive a salary according to BesGr. B 1 BBesO. A promotion according to BesGr. B 2 BBesO is possible at a later date provided that the applicant is suitably qualified, competent and performs professionally within the framework of the available positions.

In the case of applicants who do not meet the career requirements for federal officials at the time of recruitment, a non-tariff remuneration shall be agreed upon. The probation period in accordance with § 34 BLV and § 31 TVöD shall apply in this case.

Candidates from the public sector shall be asked for a declaration of consent in order to consult their personal files. At the same time, you shall be prepared to carry out any subsequent inspection that may be necessary in accordance with the German Screening Act (Sicherheitsüberprüfungsgesetz - SÜG).
